.Ses heads to the chopping block

Another dot-brand top level domain bites the dust.

Satellite communications and broadcast company SES S.A. is terminating its top level domain name.

The company was granted the .ses top level domain name in the 2012 round. It hasn’t used it for much; Google has only indexed astra.ses and the obligatory nic.ses. Astra.ses forwards to ses.com, but there is a site on the subdomain de.astra.ses.

SES sent the termination notice to ICANN in June, but the organization just issued its preliminary notice not to transition the operation of the domain this week.

The domain seems sufficiently generic that one of the more creative new top level domain operators might be interested in acquiring it.

A handful of brands say they’re clamoring for an opportunity to apply for their names in the next round. It’s somewhat surprising, given the lackluster use of dot-brands awarded in the first round.
