What to watch for at ICANN 74

Prep Week is a preview of what’s to come.

ICANN is getting together in person next month in the Hague. Here’s what to expect.

ICANN 74, this year’s Policy Forum, will take place June 13-16 in the Hague. It’s the first ICANN meeting to include in-person attendance since the meeting in Montreal at the end of 2019.

As I’ve noted over the past few weeks, there are a lot of topics of relevance to domain investors. If you’re not attending in person, you can still view live streams or replays of the sessions. You’ll have to register to attend at the ICANN meeting site before you jump into sessions, however.

ICANN’s Prep Week is next week, May 31-June 2. It features primers and reviews of ongoing operations and projects for the main event a couple of weeks later. The full schedule has been posted, and here are some highlights from a domainer perspective:

  • The New gTLD Subsequent Procedures Operational Design Phase rolls on, with an update presentation during Prep Week. We’re inching closer to new new TLDs.
  • The Initial Report of Phase 1a of the Transfer Policy Review will also be presented during Prep Week on June 2. As I recently wrote, there are some big changes worth considering and commenting on. This session will be an opportunity to give your opinion.
  • The Prioritization Framework is also getting attention during Prep Week as part of the Planning and Finance Update. There might be some fireworks (or at least an interesting discussion) at Who Sets ICANN’s Priorities?
  • If you just want a general overview of all things ICANN, the Prep Week Policy Update will give you a little bit of everything.

Another thing to watch for at ICANN 74? Covid. My wife just went to a conference in Dallas and picked up Covid while there. She has been stuck at a hotel for over a week while recovering. So, if I can share some advice, bring anything critical you might need if you get stuck there (e.g., medicines) for a while.

While I won’t be at ICANN 74, I’d love to visit the Hague sometime, and I’m jealous of those going. I’m collecting some ideas for people visiting the Netherlands and will have another story about that shortly.
