Niche domain communities: Canadian domain forum enters third year

DN.ca enters third year with focus on Canadian domains and domainers.

Some advice I give to podcasters, bloggers and other creators is to “niche down”. Try to be a big fish in a small pond rather than a small fish in a big pond.

The same advice could be given to someone creating a community these days. If you want to start a domain forum, should you be all things to all people? Probably not. NamePros already has a stranglehold and it would be difficult to compete.

But there are niche domain forums out there, particularly for country code domain names. AcornDomains is a site dedicated to UK domain names. And a couple of years ago, DN.ca launched for Canadian domainers.

Frank Mardian, who goes by MapleDots on forums, launched DN.ca in late 2020. The site has garnered over 20,000 posts since then, including from some of the biggest .ca domain holders.

In addition to providing a place for people in Canada to talk about domain names (or people elsewhere to talk about Canadian domains), DN.ca has features to help them sell domains. Each member gets a free market page where they can showcase their domains for sale. Here’s Frank’s market page.

Categories include conversations about dropping domains, registrars, and CIRA (the organization that runs .ca). There’s also a “Hushed Topics” category that is not indexed by Google and requires registration to view.

DN.ca is free for users.

Are there other niche domain communities out there that you are aware of?
