GoDaddy finishes .tv migration, launches marketing campaign

Company is ready to reinvigorate marketing for .tv extension.

Logo for .TV has a stylized V with the right line angling hard to the right.

GoDaddy Registry has completed the takeover of registry services for .tv domain names.

.Tv is the country code for Tuvalu, a tiny island nation in the South Pacific. But its domain names are most commonly used for sites related to video, streaming, and other types of broadcasting.

For example, Major League Baseball uses MLB.tv for its streaming package, and streaming service Twitch uses twitch.tv.

GoDaddy is taking over from Verisign, which didn’t submit a proposal when Tuvalu put the contract out for rebid.

Verisign introduced the idea of premium domains with .tv, with the best domains requiring higher registration and renewal fees. It’s a practice that’s been widely adopted by new top level domain operators. GoDaddy plans to launch a new premium tier program next year.

Standard pricing remains the same as before, and GoDaddy Registry plans to run promotions from time to time. GoDaddy (the registrar) charges $49.99 annually, which is on the high side. Porkbun charges $26.24, and Namecheap charges $31.98.

GoDaddy Registry is putting some marketing muscle behind the extension. It created a new site at TurnOn.tv.
